The Obsidian Vasectomy: What to Expect Before, During, and After

A vasectomy remains the most effective form of permanent birth control available to men. As more couples seek long-term family planning solutions, understanding the entire process – from consultation to recovery – can help men who plan to undergo a vasectomy prepare for the procedure. To make the process as stress-free as possible, our team has mindfully tailored the Obsidian Vasectomy to be a virtually painless, low-risk experience for patients. Here’s everything you need to know about the “before,” “during,” and “after” of our no scalpel, no needle procedure.

Understanding the Basics: What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that prevents sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. During the procedure, the vas deferens – the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles – are carefully cut and sealed. This prevents sperm from reaching the semen, effectively preventing pregnancy while maintaining normal ejaculatory function and hormone production.

A few things to note:

  • The procedure does not affect testosterone levels.
  • Sexual function and pleasure remain unchanged.
  • The testicles continue to produce sperm, but they are naturally reabsorbed by the body.
  • The procedure is considered permanent, though reversal is possible in some cases.

Pre-Procedure Preparation

Medical Evaluation

Before scheduling a vasectomy, you’ll undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation to ensure you’re a suitable candidate. This typically includes:

  • A review of your medical and surgical history.
  • Discussion of any current medications.
  • A physical examination to include scrotal exam.
  • Assessment of anatomical considerations that might affect the procedure.
  • Screening for bleeding disorders or other relevant medical conditions.

Several Days Before Your Procedure

Here are a few things you’ll need to do before your procedure:

  • Stop taking blood-thinning medications (with your doctor’s guidance).
  • Arrange transportation to and from the procedure.
  • Clear your schedule for 48-72 hours of rest.
  • Take a shower with Hibiclens the night before and morning of your procedure.
  • Take your premedications as prescribed

The Night Before

The evening before your vasectomy, you’ll need to be sure to:

  • Shower thoroughly with chlorhexidine surgical soap.
  • Trim or shave the scrotal area if directed by your physician.

The Morning Of

  • Take your pre-medications as prescribed by your physician.
  • Shower again with chlorhexidine.

During The Procedure: What Actually Happens

Types of Vasectomy

Modern vasectomies typically fall into two categories:

  • Traditional vasectomy. This involves one or two small incisions in the scrotum and allows direct access to the vas deferens. It’s a slightly longer recovery time and may require stitches. Note: Obsidian does not perform traditional vasectomy. We offer a minimally invasive alternative; no scalpel or needles!
  • No-scalpel vasectomy. Obsidian’s approach uses a small puncture instead of incisions. This minimally invasive approach typically offers a faster recovery and usually does not require stitches.

During the Procedure

The actual vasectomy typically takes 20-30 minutes and involves:

  • Administration of anesthesia. A local anesthetic protocol is induced to numb the area. This begins with a topical anesthetic cream followed by a Madajet device. If a needle is required, patients will not feel a needle stick. We take the time to ensure patients are comfortable and relaxed during this process so that minimal discomfort is experienced. The anesthetic will remain effective throughout the procedure. If we can’t do the procedure comfortably it will NOT be done. There is simply no “torturing” in our practice.
  • Accessing the vas deferens. During this next step, our surgeon will create a small access point(s) for careful isolation of the vas deferens and minimal tissue disruption.
  • Blocking the tubes. Next, surgeons will proceed with cutting the vas deferens, sealing the ends (may include cauterization, clips, or sutures), and placing the ends in separate tissue planes to prevent reconnection.
  • Closing the access points. Finally, access points are closed with a small stitch or surgical tape – though not usually needed – and apply the dressing.

Post-Procedure Recovery

Patients who trust in the Obsidian vasectomy can expect to experience reduced recovery times; which means less downtime compared to traditional vasectomies. The recovery period is typically swift and straightforward due to our minimally invasive approach. Patients often experience less swelling, bruising, and pain compared to traditional methods. To support a quick recovery, patients should:

  • Rest immediately following the procedure. We recommend “couch potato” rest for 48-72 hours with regular icing of the scrotum, 20 minutes on/off.
  • Wear supportive garments. Some men prefer to wear supportive underwear following a vasectomy but it is not required.
  • Gradual resume activities. Most normal daily activities of living can be resumed after 2-3 days. Heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, swimming and sexual activity must be avoided for one week.
  • Monitor symptoms. Mild discomfort is normal but most of our patients use ice and Tylenol for excellent pain control. Stronger pain medication will be made available if needed.
